Fall Bacchanalia

On Thursday, September 25th 2008, new and returning English majors met with English faculty for UMA's first Fall Bacchanalia. Students enjoyed the camaraderie of a team scavenger hunt, with prizes awarded from Barnes and Noble bookstore, followed by pizza and some group poetry writing. If you missed our fall event, try the scavenger hunt on your own:

Welcome to the UMA English Department Bacchanalia. Today you will work in teams to find the information listed below. The successful team(s) will receive a gift certification from Barnes and Noble book store. All will get a Free Lunch (at UMA, there’s frequently a free lunch).

Some helpful information: English literature professors are Lisa Botshon in Jewett Hall (JH), Robert Kellerman (JH), Chelsea Ray (JH), Jill Rubinson in the Student Technology Center (STC), and Ellen Taylor (JH).

English writing faculty includes Carol Kontos (JH), Elie Leo (STC), and Nancy Schneider (JH).

1) Make a note of a magnet on each literature professor’s door, as well as her/his office hours for the fall semester.
2) While in JH, get the signature of our Arts and Humanities office Administrative Assistant, June MacLeod. Find out the name of her most recent cat.
3) From the dean of Arts and Humanities, Peggy Danielson, find out her favorite course to teach before she was in administration. Where does she spend her summers when she’s not working?
4) What are the hours for the Writing Center in JH? Find out the name of the director and one Writing Center tutor.
5) In the library, pick up a book mark with the fall semester hours on it.
6) Find out the names of two reference librarians, as well as the names of their pets (if they have them). Are they cat people, or dog people?
7) Find the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). What is the definition of wysiwyg? What is the etymology? While you are in the dictionary, find out more about the source of Augusta.
8) Where in the library would you find a book on conversational French?
9) Using Project Muse in the library data base, find the author of “Book History, Sexy Knowledge, and the Challenge of the New Boredom.” What is the first sentence of this article?
10) Find out which English literature faculty have lived overseas, and where they lived.

BONUS: find the name of either a child, pet, or childhood best friend, for each English literature faculty person. Arrange them in a heroic quatrain.
