Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts

OBJECTIVES:

The program is intended to provide two years of a traditional liberal arts curriculum for students who plan to transfer to a baccalaureate program in liberal arts. The program also provides the opportunity for developing a basis for critical thinking in academics as well as in life. The liberal education enables students to gain the ability to analyze, synthesize, and theorize. Students will learn to think and learn to learn.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics
  • at least one year of foreign language in high school recommended
  • transfer credit for courses with grade of "C" or better

ADVISING:

All students are required to meet with their advisors prior to registration. An advisor’s signature or electronic equivalent is required for registration. Students are encouraged to continue to meet with their advisors on a regular basis to help ensure a productive and meaningful college experience. Students at a distance may be able to do their advising sessions over the telephone or at a University of Maine System center.

TRANSFER:

A student may transfer to an appropriate baccalaureate degree program after graduation.

DEGREE:

Upon successful completion of the program requirements (61-62 credit hours at a minimum grade point average of 2.00) the student will be awarded an associate of arts in liberal arts degree.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. ENGLISH & COMMUNICATIONS: ENG101 and 102W and COM101, 102, 104, or 106
  2. FOREIGN LANGUAGE: 6 credit hours, two semesters of one foreign or American sign language
  3. FINE ARTS: 3 credit hours chosen from ARH105, 106; ART211, DRA101, 265, 280; INT129; MUS123, 160, 180, 333, 334
  4. HISTORY: HTY101/102 or HTY103/104 or HTY105/106
  5. HUMANITIES: 6 credit hours which must include 3 credit hours in literature and a course chosen from any art history; ART211; DRA101, 265, 280; any literature; any HTY; any humanities; INT129; MUS110, 113, 117, 120, 123, 124, 131, 160, 180, 223, 333, 334; any PHI; HUM/POS390; WST101W
  6. MATHEMATICS: 6 credit hours (MAT112 level or higher)
  7. NATURAL SCIENCE: 7-8 credit hours which must include 4 credits of a laboratory science and one other science
  8. SOCIAL SCIENCE: 9 credit hours which must include two different disciplines selected from ANT101 or 102; ECO100, 201 or 202; GEO101; POS101 or 102; PSY100; SOC101 or 201
  9. FREE ELECTIVES: 9 credit hours of 200-level courses
  10. WOMEN’S STUDIES CONCENTRATION: 18 credit hours from WST101, 201; one course from ENG185, ENG/WST350, HTY225, MUS180, PHI/WST336; one coure from ANT102, SOC120, SOC360, SSC110, SSC220, SSC314, SSC332; one course from BUA225, JUS245, JUS227, LET222, LET255, HUS233, HUS263; and one course from any of those listed above.
