Bachelor of Arts in Art

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The bachelor of arts in art degree is an innovative program offered in collaboration with the University of Maine at Farmington. An articulation agreement between the two schools affords students access to more extensive and better equipped facilities, combined library resources, a more diverse faculty, and adds more depth and breadth to the educational experience than a student might experience at a single campus. In addition, the gallery programs at both schools are enhanced by sharing visiting artists, exhibitions and publications.

The program is designed to encourage critical thinking and creative problem solving, which are requisite skills for functioning in today’s complex global society. Rigorous undergraduate studies in art provide the structure and opportunities for students to develop these skills. In addition, students are afforded the freedom and support to evolve their own creative potential, which is linked to the study of achievements of artists past and present. Majors will build a solid foundation that prepares them for the practical use of visual language in their chosen fields.

Graduates of the program will:

  • be prepared for entry into post-baccalaureate degree programs in visual art
  • possess a strong foundation and understanding of the elements and principles of art design and will gain an appreciation of major art movements and artists of the post and present
  • have developed strong technical competencies in at least two studio disciplines
  • have the ability to exhibit professionally
  • be an effective spokesperson and advocate for art both within the various disciplines and within the community
  • gain an awareness of the creative potential of the new technologies such as computer imaging
  • be exposed to a wide range of intellectual diversity

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

The following academic criteria will be applied to recent high school graduates to help determine admission.

  • a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • minimum English language competency permitting registration in ENG005 and REA008 or higher
  • acceptable class standing in high school with a preferable college preparatory program
  • satisfactory SAT scores—applicants are never denied admission based solely on the basis of test scores
  • honors and advanced placement courses are highly recommended
  • use of time—activities/work
  • passing a portfolio review by a joint UMA and UMF art faculty committee prior to the start of the third year if entering the studio art concentration.

For applicants who are not recent high school graduates, consideration is given to life experience and any college-level work done since high school. A high school diploma or a GED is required.

ADVISING:

All students are required to meet with their advisors prior to registration. An advisor’s signature or electronic equivalent is required for registration. Students are encouraged to continue to meet with their advisors on a regular basis to help ensure a productive and meaningful college experience.

TRANSFER:

  • a minimum overall 2.50 GPA and a 3.00 GPA in any art courses are required
  • passing a portfolio review as described above in “Entrance Requirements”
  • students currently matriculated in a UMA degree program need to submit a “change of major” card rather than an application form
