
Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies is designed to provide students with a foundation in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to achieve deeper understanding within a chosen area of concentration or through a curriculum more personally constructed with the help of an academic advisor.
The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies builds on the existing Associate of Arts degree program in Liberal Studies and offers the most flexible B.A. degree at the University of Maine at Augusta. Students will complete General Education requirements, take at least two interdisciplinary courses, and be guided to choose a structured concentration and/or construct a curriculum to meet their established educational and/or career goals.
Graduates of the program will:
- be prepared for entry into a post baccalaureate degree program
- be exposed to situations that promote critical thinking and problem solving skills
- have a solid baccalaureate liberal arts general education and least an intermediate level exposure to a specific university discipline
- have an enhanced ability for professional advancement and/or career and lifestyle changes
- have effective verbal and written skills
- have research skills to facilitate lifelong learning
- be exposed to intellectual and cultural diversity
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- minimum English language competency permitting registration in ENG005 and REA008 or higher
ADVISING:
All students are required to meet with their advisors prior to registration. An advisor’s signature or electronic equivalent is required for registration. Students are encouraged to continue to meet with their advisors on a regular basis to help ensure a productive and meaningful college experience.
DEGREE:
Upon successful completion of the program (121-122 hours at a minimum GPA of 2.00) the student will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degree.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
- ENGLISH & COMMUNICATIONS: ENG101 and 102W; COM101, 102, 104, or 106
- DIVERSE TIMES & CULTURES: a two semester sequence of American Sign Language or a foreign language and HTY103/104 or HTY105/106
- FINE ARTS: 3 credit hours from any studio art, music, theater or dance performance course and 3 credit hours from ARH105, 106; ART211; INT129; MUS123, 333, 334
- HUMANITIES: 3 credit hours to be selected from any art history; ART211; DRA101, 165, 280; any literature course; any history course; any humanities course; MUS110, 113, 117, 120, 123, 124, 131, 160, 180, 223, 333, 334; any philosophy course; POS390; WST101W
- INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES: 3 credit hours from INT101, 102, 111, 129, 151, 203, 204, 360
- MATHEMATICS & RESEARCH: any math course above 100 and SSC 320
- SCIENCE & COMPUTER SCIENCE: any laboratory science, descriptive science, or computer science course and a laboratory science course
- SOCIAL SCIENCE: 6 credit hours, in two different disciplines, from ANT101, 102; ECO100, 201, 202; GEO101, POS101, 102; PSY100; SOC101, 201
- UPPER LEVEL REQUIREMENTS: 42 credit hours in 300 or 400 level courses
- GENERAL ELECTIVES: 33 credit hours
