BASIC SKILLS COURSES

Basic skills courses, sometimes referred to as developmental courses, are available to help students increase their proficiency in college-level reading, writing, and mathematics. The Placement Testing Program is designed to identify students needing brush-up course work in one or more of these areas. Basic skills courses do not carry degree program credit. Financial aid can pay for these courses. Contact: college offices.

BOOKSTORE

The UMA Bookstore is a full service university bookstore, located in the new Student Center on the Augusta campus. The bookstore is dedicated to providing outstanding customer service to the university and local community. In addition to required textbooks for on-site University of Maine at Augusta courses and all University College courses, nursing reference materials and study aids are also available. Within the bookstore you will find a wide variety of imprinted merchandise (including clothing, ceramics and glassware, and gift ideas), school supplies, and graduation memorabilia. Textbooks and imprinted merchandise may be purchased online (http://www.umabookstore.com/). Textbooks may also be ordered by phone (1-800-621-0083), mail, or fax (1-800-243-7338). Self-explanatory order forms are available at University College centers and sites. During the beginning of each semester, the bookstore is open for extended hours. Hours are posted on the Web site and in the semester course guide. For your convenience, textbooks for classes held at the Bangor campus may be purchased at the bookstore on the Bangor campus. The Bangor campus bookstore also stocks a limited amount of imprinted merchandise and school supplies, and is open for several weeks during the beginning of each semester. Bookstore services for UMA Lewiston-Auburn Campus students are provided through the Lewiston-Auburn College Bookstore. BULLETIN BOARDS

There are several bulletin boards on the campuses to inform students of campus and community activities. The boards are also available for appropriate personal use. Intentional or reckless misuse, destruction, or defacement of bulletin boards and their postings is a violation of the Student Conduct Code. (Bulletin Board Policy in Policies and Procedures section of this handbook.) BUS SERVICE

The Kennebec Valley Transit Bus System (which provides transportation to the Augusta-Gardiner area) is available to Augusta students. The Augusta Student Government Association has sponsored free passes for students paying activity fees. Public transportation is available at the Bangor campus through the BAT. Local transportation to UMA Lewiston-Auburn is provided by Hudson Bus Lines.
